Everything about The University Of Ruhuna totally explained

The University of Ruhuna is a university located in Matara, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1978 and is organized in 7 Faculties.

History

The established of the University of Ruhuna was proposed by Dr Nissanka Wijeyeratne the Cabinet Minister of Education & Higher Education at the time. On September 1, 1978 as Ruhuna University fulfilling a long cherished desire of the people of the South to have a University in the region. It was housed in the Technical College buildings at Meddawatte, Matara with only about 40 academics, 50 non-academics and 275 students. A new building complex for the university was designed by the world-renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa and was constructed at Wellamadama with a unique architectural landscape. The RUC was shifted to the new premises in 1984 which it was elevated to full university status. During the past twenty five years, it has witnessed considerable progress and development in the academic, research and out-reach spheres with substantial improvement in intellectual and infrastructure resources, and has now emerged as a leader of higher education in Sri Lanka.
   To date, it has produced about 10,000 graduates and over 75 postgraduates and currently around 100 postgraduate students are pursuing masters and doctoral programmes at the university in various disciplines that are of particular relevance to the development of the region in particular and the country in general.
   Presently, it has seven faculties, namely Agriculture, Engineering, Fisheries and Marine Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management and Finance, Medicine, and Science. The University has responded to the needs of the country and has been able to establish two new faculties, namely Faculty of 'Management and Finance' and the Faculty of 'Fisheries and Marine Science and Technology' - the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. Thus the University that has seven faculties, which is equal to the number of faculties at the University of Peradeniya - the largest university in Sri Lanka.

The main Camupus is located at Matara. The Faculty of Engineering and Medicine is located at Hapugala and Karapitiya respectively at about 5 km away from Galle city center. The Faculty of Agriculture is located at Mapalana, 16 kilometers north of Matara and 2 kilometers south of Kamburupitiya.

Student Life

Faculty Student's Union

According to the amended University Act of 1988, Section 26, students of each faculty can form a Faculty Union consisting of all students of that faculty. The main objective of this Union is to promote academic actions, to safeguard the rights of the student population, to work for the advancement and welfare of the students and the faculty.

Student Societies

In addition to the Faculty Union, there are other registered societies which are affiliated to different departments.
  • Ruhuna University Botanical Society This was established in 1980 and its contribution to the University is considerable. The society has launched a programme to set up its branches in schools of Matara District with the view to popularizing nature conservation. The tree-planting campaigns were organized by the society.
  • The Physics Society The main aim of the Physics Society is to educate the members with the modern knowledge of physics and to work for the advancement of the mankind. Seminars are held frequently to educate the members about the current research and findings in the areas related to the field of physics. Also, the students of the society arrange special courses to share their knowledge with others. A magazine, named ``The Horizon, is also published by the Physics Society.
  • The Zoological Society The Zoological Society was established in 1992 with the aim of enlightening the members, of threatened wild life and current affairs related to the field. Any of the registered student of the University of Ruhuna can be a member of this society. The society also has an interest in establishing a bird-watching group in collaboration with the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka.
  • The Computer Society of the University of Ruhuna The main objective of the Computer Society is to create the awareness among its members of the diversity of today's computer applications. It organizes popular lectures on various subjects related to Computer Science. The society organizes a well-received exhibition called UNICOM . To mark the event, a magazine called UNICOM is also published.

    Sport Facilities

    The University is equipped with a large Gymnasium which is the third best in Sri Lanka with seating capacity for 3000 spectators. Training facilities for many indoor sports activities are available here for students after 12.00 p.m. every week days. These includes:
